Having the opportunity to serve as a mentor through Bridges by Mentors helped me further embrace the concept of inclusivity, cultural differences and increased my ethical awareness. Working with children from vulnerable populations and difficult backgrounds was challenging. Some of the children had language barriers that made communication more difficult, but this experience helped me strengthen my communication skills and elevated my skills to pick up behavioural cues and adapt quickly to fit the children’s personalities and needs. I gained a greater understanding of my own limits. Patience was also a key necessary skill working with this population, and I realised that they needed someone to truly believe in them.
