At Université Savoie Mont Blanc, participants of Bridges by Mentors joined the 28th edition of the Tour du Monde à Chambé, contributing to a city-wide event in Chambéry, France. This annual two-day event is a student-led initiative combining cultural exchange with local residents, performances showcasing various art forms, and interactive activities for school groups.
16 participants of Bridges by Mentors took an active part in this event, alongside 90 other international students from Université Savoie Mont Blanc. After a first day dedicated to intercultural games with school groups, the second day was dedicated to engaging with the local community.
The second day began with a parade through the city centre, with students showcasing their countries’ flags. The rest of the day saw students running stands that they created to represent their own cultures. Over 30 cultures were represented, with colourful displays of traditional objects and clothing, home-made snacks, and interactive games for visitors. Throughout the day, around 5000 residents of Chambéry visited the stands to ask questions, observe, learn about customs and traditions, while sharing their own cultural experiences.
Many students found the experience very meaningful and enjoyable as it gave them the opportunity to engage with the local community and learn from others. Students were proud to share their cultural values and traditions with others, and it provided a rare chance for local residents to interact directly with international students. The experience also gave Bridges by Mentors participants the chance to use their creativity, take initiatives, and hone their intercultural communication skills. They would highly recommend that international students take part in Tour du Monde à Chambé in the future.
