How Mentorship Changed My Perspective: Let’s Hear from Yaryna

Yaryna Yanishevska is a Ukrainian student specializing in European and International Business Law at Université Savoie Mont Blanc. Her double Master’s degree programme has brought her to France and Lithuania. She describes her involvement in Bridges by Mentors as both transformative and deeply meaningful.

Here is her recent experience in the Bridges by Mentors Transnational Student Meeting in Plovdiv, Bulgaria:

Participating in the Transnational Meeting in Plovdiv was a transformative experience that deeply enriched both my personal and professional growth as a mentor. As a Student Ambassador, I supported students who were seeking guidance in navigating their academic, social, or personal challenges. Coming into the program, I hoped to strengthen my skills and broaden my perspective, and I left with much more than I expected.

One of the most valuable lessons I gained was learning how intentional and powerful mentorship can be when it is grounded in empathy and active listening. The sessions in Plovdiv helped me understand that mentorship is not about giving solutions, but about helping someone discover their own strengths and direction. Through role-playing activities, group reflections, and cultural exchange discussions, I learned how small changes, like asking open-ended questions or leaving space for silence, can create moments of clarity for a mentee.

What I found particularly meaningful was the focus on creating a safe environment, a space where mentees feel comfortable sharing their challenges honestly. I now approach mentoring with more patience and intentionality, guiding students through reflective conversations rather than immediately giving advice.

Interacting with participants and mentors from different countries was a highlight of the entire program. Hearing stories from diverse educational systems and cultural backgrounds helped me broaden my understanding of what effective mentoring can look like. It reminded me that there is no universal formula; instead, effective mentoring requires flexibility, cultural sensitivity, and the courage to adapt.

The Bridges by Mentors programme has reinforced my belief that mentorship can create real, lasting change, one conversation at a time. I am grateful for the experience and excited to continue applying what I have learned in my future mentoring work.
