Young Mentors Gathered in Plovdiv for the Bridges by Mentors Transnational Student Meeting

From 28 November to 3 December 2025, twenty-four students, coming from 17 different cultural backgrounds and presenting 5 partner organizations (NHL Stenden, USMB, HOWEST, UNIC and BBBS) met in Plovdiv, Bulgaria, for a Transnational Student Meeting under the Bridges by Mentors project. Hosted at Hotel EXPO, the event brought together young mentors to develop their skills, learn from each other and co-create materials to promote mentoring in their host countries.

A Week of Learning and Inspiration

The programme opened with activities designed to build trust and connection, followed by the “Intercultural Iceberg” workshop, which helped participants explore how cultural differences influence mentoring. A treasure hunt through Plovdiv rounded off the first day and set a positive tone for the week.

Over the following days, students engaged in practical mentoring workshops, shared their personal mentoring journeys and participated in discussions on the realities of mentoring in different countries. Interactive sessions such as roleplays and simulations encouraged the students to reflect on challenges they might face and to practice responding to real-life situations. Inspiration also came from experienced Big Brothers Big Sisters mentors, who shared insights from their work.

The final working day focused on storytelling and dissemination. Students crafted personal narratives for future outreach and collaborated in a Creation Lab to design promotional materials. A closing showcase and a farewell event marked the end of a productive and motivating week.

What Students Shared

Feedback from participants was very positive. Students appreciated the organisation, the variety of activities and the opportunities to learn from peers. At the same time, they highlighted the need for more preparation before starting mentoring, including clearer definitions of the mentor’s role and more practical advice for handling challenges. Many also expressed a desire for ongoing support throughout the mentoring process.

Students left the event inspired and eager to deepen their involvement in mentoring.

Moving Forward

Each national team committed to a dissemination plan, including at least one local event aimed at reaching twenty additional students by mid-February 2026. A follow-up online meeting will take place at the end of February to share results and experiences.

A Meaningful Exchange

The Transnational Student Meeting in Plovdiv strengthened mentoring competences, encouraged intercultural exchange and empowered young mentors to promote the value of mentoring in their communities. The enthusiasm and engagement of the participants clearly demonstrated the positive impact such international gatherings can have on young people and the mentoring programmes they support.
